Western Red Cedar Barn with DIY Chinking
This barn project demonstrates how traditional timber construction can be combined with modern manufacturing technology and hands-on customer involvement. Built using Western Red Cedar and prefabricated log wall panels, the structure brings together the natural appearance of solid timber and the advantages of precisely manufactured components.
An important aspect of this project was the customer's decision to participate directly in the construction process. By undertaking the chinking work themselves, the customer could reduce labour costs while contributing personally to the character and finish of the building.
Precision Manufacturing with Robotics
The timber components for this barn were manufactured using industrial robotics and our AbbyCam© software. This technology allows us to prepare individual components and connections with a high degree of accuracy before they reach the construction site.
Combining automated manufacturing with traditional timber construction helps simplify the assembly process while retaining the distinctive appearance of a handcrafted log building.
A Practical Approach to Owner Participation
Not every construction project requires the customer to remain completely hands-off. With professionally manufactured components, selected finishing tasks can be carried out by the owner or local contractors.
In this project, the customer chose to complete the chinking between the logs. Chinking is an important part of the traditional appearance of this style of construction and, when properly installed, helps seal the joints between the timber elements.
This approach demonstrates how a building project can be adapted to the customer's budget, skills, and desired level of involvement.
