You Already Understand the Hard Part
You Already Understand the Hard Part
A good handcrafter understands timber.
You know how to select logs, how they behave, where they belong in a structure and what a good connection looks like. You understand sequencing, assembly and all the practical details that do not appear on a drawing.
None of that knowledge becomes obsolete because part of the manufacturing is done differently.
Keep the Customer
Keep the Customer
There is a customer who wants a natural-log home and loves the appearance of traditional handcrafted construction.
Then they discover how much skilled labour goes into building one.
If a fully handcrafted home is beyond their budget, the choice should not have to become a milled-log home or no log home at all.
We can give you another natural-log option to put in front of that customer.
The Expensive Part Is the Work
The Expensive Part Is the Work
Traditional natural-log construction requires a remarkable amount of skilled fitting.
A log is positioned, measured and scribed against the log below. It is removed, cut, returned to the wall and checked. If the fit is not right, it comes out again.
Repeat that process connection after connection, log after log, through an entire building.
That labour is one of the reasons a genuinely handcrafted natural-log home costs what it does.
We Change the Manufacturing, Not the Timber
We Change the Manufacturing, Not the Timber
We start with the same problem: every natural log is different.
Instead of repeatedly fitting the log physically, we scan its actual shape. AbbyCam© can work with that individual geometry digitally, calculate the required connections and prepare the machining.
Industrial robots then perform much of the repetitive cutting.
The computer and robot do not make the logs identical. They allow us to work accurately with the fact that the logs are not identical.
Save Your Back for the Work That Needs You
Save Your Back for the Work That Needs You
Traditional log construction is physical work. Handling large timber and spending day after day fitting and cutting logs with a chainsaw takes its toll.
Experience becomes more valuable with age. Your back generally does not.
Moving repetitive measuring and machining into a controlled manufacturing process lets experienced builders spend more of their time on the work where their knowledge actually matters.
Skilled Hands Are Hard to Replace
Skilled Hands Are Hard to Replace
Traditional handcrafting depends heavily on experienced people. That can also make growth difficult.
Training somebody to understand natural-log construction takes time, and finding younger workers who want to learn a physically demanding trade is not always easy.
Moving repetitive manufacturing work to scanners, software and robots can allow a small experienced team to take on more work without requiring the same increase in highly skilled fitting labour.
We Are Not Trying to Replace the Craft
There will always be customers who want a fully handcrafted building and are prepared to pay for the time and skill required to make it.
Keep building those homes.
What we offer is another product for the customer who wants individually shaped natural logs but needs a different balance between labour, production time and cost.
The scanner, software and robots are manufacturing tools. What remains visible is the timber.
Handcraft and technology do not have to be enemies.
